兩百多年后的今天,菲利普斯學(xué)校仍然充滿活力,不僅向世人展示著她豐富的歷史傳統(tǒng)和建校人當(dāng)年的夢(mèng)想與渴望,而且不斷改革創(chuàng)新,與時(shí)代同步發(fā)展。
1972~1981年任該學(xué)校校長(zhǎng)的Theodore R. Sizer曾是哈佛大學(xué)教育研究生院的院長(zhǎng),他在就任該校校長(zhǎng)期間指出:
“Andover ought to stand for the eal of a heterogeneous school. It ought to demonstrate the special power of such for learning. Accordingly, Andover should vigorously recruit an international student body, boys and girls of social, racial, national and religious diversity. (安多福應(yīng)該堅(jiān)持做一個(gè)多元化學(xué)校的觀念。她應(yīng)該展示這種多元性對(duì)學(xué)習(xí)所能帶來(lái)的特殊力量。為此,安多福應(yīng)竭力招收國(guó)際學(xué)生,招收不同社會(huì)階層、不同民族、不同國(guó)家、不同信仰的男孩和女孩。)
“We presume to forward the learning of leaders here, and leaders in our day must know first-hand how trivial are racial, social, national and religious differences, and how significant is the unity in humanity.(我們?cè)谶@里努力培養(yǎng)未來(lái)的領(lǐng)導(dǎo)人,而當(dāng)今的領(lǐng)導(dǎo)人首先必須懂得人們?cè)诿褡濉⑸鐣?huì)階層、國(guó)家和信仰方面的區(qū)別是多么的不值一提,必須懂得人類的團(tuán)結(jié)有多么重要。)
“The founders of this school knew better...teenage years are something in which to invest, to respect or to trust, and we reassert that knowledge. We do take youth, and adolescent education, seriously. Youth is important, a crucial time of life. For those whom Andover serves, now and in the future, we want it to be a rich, constructive and joyful experience.(這個(gè)學(xué)校的奠基人懂得:青少年是需要投資、需要尊重、需要信任的,今天我們重申這一點(diǎn)。我們認(rèn)真對(duì)待青少年、對(duì)待青少年教育。青少年時(shí)期是人生中極其重要的、非常關(guān)鍵的時(shí)期。對(duì)于今天和今后來(lái)安多福學(xué)習(xí)的孩子們,我們將給他們一段豐富的、有建設(shè)性的、快樂(lè)的校園生活經(jīng)歷。)”
2000年,學(xué)校在更新的“辦學(xué)宗旨”中,重申了當(dāng)初的辦學(xué)思想,也融入了新時(shí)期的特點(diǎn)。
